Frequently Asked Questions
Working as an international student
How many hours can I work on a student visa?
It depends on your destination. Many countries allow part-time work during term (often ~20 hours/week) and full-time during scheduled breaks โ but you must keep full-time enrollment and follow your visa conditions. See the Work Compliance Guide above for country-specific limits.
Do I need a tax or social security number to work?
Usually yes. Most destinations require a tax/payroll ID (e.g. TFN in Australia, SIN in Canada, SSN in the US) before you start. Apply for it as soon as you arrive so your first pay is taxed correctly.
What kinds of jobs can students realistically get?
Part-time roles in retail, hospitality, customer service and admin are the most common during study. Internships and graduate programs become available as you progress, and many destinations offer a post-study work permit after graduation.
Can I work in my field of study?
Often yes through internships, on-campus roles, or post-graduation work schemes (e.g. OPT for STEM in the US). Field-specific roles may need background checks (healthcare, childcare, education), which take a few weeks to process.
